We examine what happens to critical management education (CME) and its educators where intense measurement and regulation of time in higher education leave little room for ‘temporal autonomy’ which are crucial for critical processes of management education such as creative pause, reflection, and critique. We explore the temporal dynamics of CME in the neoliberal university, drawing on our experiences through a collaborative auto-ethnographic study where we utilised the story completion method. Our analysis reveals the transfiguration of educators’ identities and practices emerging from the confrontation with time as a ruler who marks and measures standards of value for activities and who commands as an oppressive sovereign. We suggest that slowing down the pace in the classroom constitutes a form of resistance against the domineering temporal structures. We find that engaging and relieving tensions through supportive peer relations can support navigating the pressures posed by time acceleration and compression.
